As a parent, it’s natural to wonder about your child’s development. If you’re concerned about autism, it’s helpful to know what typical development looks like. While every child is unique, certain behaviors and milestones can offer reassurance.

1. Engaging Social Interactions

Children developing typically often:

  • Respond to their name by 6 months.
  • Make eye contact and smile at familiar faces.
  • Enjoy playing interactive games like peek-a-boo.
  • Show interest in others’ emotions and express empathy.

According to the CDC, by 18 months, many toddlers can say several simple words and point to named objects or pictures

2. Typical Language Development

Most children:

  • Babble and imitate sounds by 6 months.
  • Use gestures like pointing or waving by 12 months.
  • Say single words by 16 months and two-word phrases by 24 months

Delays in speech can occur for various reasons, but if your child is meeting these milestones, it’s a positive sign of typical development .

If your child is meeting these social and language milestones, it’s a good indication they’re developing typically. However, if you have concerns, it’s always best to consult with a pediatrician or specialist. Early intervention for autism can make a significant difference.
